01.31.20 Yarrow

The yarrow flowers are one of the many signs of spring around the corner. They pop up like brightly colored bunches of umbrellas asking for a little more rain to grow even brighter. This year my fascination went beyond mere visual admiration because I learned of their medicinal properties. I have always wanted to make a tincture and here was my opportunity. Tinctures are a natural liquid medicine made from plants and alcohol. Yarrow regulates blood flow. It can help to stop heavy bleeding associated with menstral cramps and it can lower blood pressure by improving circulation.

Making a yarrow tincture is easy. Just chop the yarrow, flower, stems and all into a glass jar and fill to the top with 100% proof vodka. The alcohol helps to extract the beneficial properties of the plant. Store in a cupboard for 6-8 weeks.
