12.29.20 Chop and Drop

Chop and drop is a permaculture term that refers to planting a fast growing tree that you can chop down for mulch. Not only do you take advantage of the leaves and branches up top but you also enrich the soil below with the roots that shed each time the branches are trimmed. A favorite chop and drop tree in Southern California is the Cassia. Somehow, we lucked out with two volunteers. They are still quite small but they already have enough foliage to share. I chopped a few small branches for our to mulch our new apricot tree following the rain.
