06.19.20 Volunteer Tomatoes

Tomatoes always know where to go. Once you plant them in your yard, they will resurface anywhere they deem the conditions to be right. We have many, many volunteer plants scattered throughout the yard. For now, we are leaving all of them to ripen and see what they produce. We can always trim back and transplant if necessary, but after a long winter of scant tomatoes, their bright appearance is welcome anywhere they choose. Today a first crop of volunteers made its way into my daily salad. I won’t go into details since I’ve already discussed my salads at length. The key components are always there; grab as much variety from the yard as possible, especially “weeds,” add as much color as possible, be generous with the olive oil, add good fats by way of nuts, seeds, avocado, etc. Eat outside, with a book or make two salads to share, no devices allowed.
