06.25.20 The Great Plum Off

Like the mulberries, this is also a tale of two Santa Rosa plum trees, seemingly identical at planting 3 years ago, but vastly different in how they have grown since. One was planted in the old compost pile and as expected, it has grown enormous in a few years. The other, planted on a hillside and competing with the myoporum, is likely a fourth of the size of the other one. The fruit is also strikingly different. The small tree has, you guessed it, smaller plums which are a dark purple. The larger tree has big fuschia purplish plums. There was nothing else to do but have a Plum Off.

The Great Plum Off:

  1. Four blindfolded contestants

  2. Two plates, each with one kind of plum

  3. Discerning palettes

  4. A score keeper

The fruit from the small plum tree won 3 : 1. But, before we start concocting theories, we may just have to do this over again next week since the big plum tree has just barely started its production. I have a sneaky suspicion that it’s fruit will become sensational in the coming weeks.
