Skin.ec.doche: Dis(in)habit

Skin.ec.doche: Dis(in)habit was the seventh episode of a series of public performance-collaborations based on a wearable shelter medium I call Shell-ter-wear. Participants received a Shell-ter-wear garment, instructions, a map of Washington Square and a disposable camera. They were asked to choose a place to set up and to use the instructions to guide them through the process of transforming their garments into a temporary shelter-pod. The disposable camera would allow them to document their experiences. The map and instructions are open ended, giving participants maximum initiative to create their own temporary, retreat, and inviting them to reconsider their psycho-geographical relationship to a space.
(Unfortunately, this project was shut down by the NYC police before completion.)
Skin.ec.doche uses Shell-ter-wear, a medium based on modules made of fabric lined with alternating snaps, light weight collapsible tent poles and hand-crafted connector units. Shell-ter-wear can be combined to make highly individualized garments. Likewise, these garments can break their personal boundaries to merge into larger architectural spaces.
